BDA Training and Education Sub-Committee – Precis of November 2024 Meeting

The BDA Training & Education (T&E) Sub-committee met on 21st November 2024 via Teams, chaired by Paul McMann. The meeting addressed several critical issues concerning training and professional development in the drilling industry. Below is a summary of the key discussions and decisions

Trailblazer Apprenticeship Development

Efforts to establish a Drilling Apprenticeship under the Trailblazer initiative continue. Engagement with employers for the occupational committee is ongoing, with a minimum of ten organisations required. Progress updates are scheduled for early 2025.

BDA Audit Updates

BDA Audit activity highlighted areas for improvement, including rig documentation and first aid training. Discussions explored the potential review of training requirements for smaller sites.

Dynamic Sampling Clarification

Deliberations centred on classifying Dynamic Sampling as either a drilling or sampling method. Plans are in place to produce guidance defining terminology to ensure clarity for VQ holders and industry stakeholders.

Training Resources

Progress was made on developing training videos, including “Life of a Sample.” Further meetings to refine these resources are planned for January 2025.

Publications and Guidance

The need for driller-specific guidance on hazardous gases in coal mining was identified. Collaboration with the Mining Remediation Authority, to adapt existing resources is underway.

Next Steps

The next T&E Sub-committee meeting is scheduled for 16th January 2025. Priorities include advancing the Trailblazer initiative, refining training materials, and addressing feedback from audits.
