November 29, 2024
The BDA Health & Safety Sub-Committee convened on 20th November 2024 via Teams, addressing a range of critical industry topics. Below is a summary of the key discussions and decisions:
Wire Line Systems
The committee discussed the variability in adherence to safety tooling guidelines across the industry. Manufacturers’ instructions remain the standard, and auditors will ensure these systems are correctly identified and implemented during audits. Further clarity will be provided following updates from the audit team.
Cable Percussion Drilling
Issues with broken pillar bearings were highlighted, with alternative solutions being developed at significant cost. The committee proposed revisiting and circulating previous industry guidance with further consideration due to recent incidents to raise awareness around this particular component.
Rotary Drilling
A rise in demand for lifting plans under LOLER regulations was noted, alongside confusion over their applicability to rotary rigs. A more in-depth position statement explaining why LOLER cannot by applied in full within the drilling industry will be developed. Temporary works and safety practices were also reviewed, with updated guidance to follow.
Hand-Arm and Whole-Body Vibration Risks
Emerging risks, particularly from sonic rigs, were discussed. Individual investigations are ongoing into mitigating measures such as improved equipment designs and innovations to reduce exposure. Noise around rigs was also identified as a concern, prompting plans for a noise awareness campaign.
Transport and Site Security
Concerns over construction site theft and safe load securing were addressed. A safety alert on load security is set to be released shortly.
Occupational Health
Mental health remains a priority, with plans for a blog on depression to be published in January. Discussions around first aid training highlighted the need to ensure best practices, with an emphasis on face-to-face training for site first aiders.
BDA Audit and Safety Guidance
Audit numbers are in line with expectations, and new asbestos training has been successfully rolled out. A comprehensive review of BDA safety guidance and legislation is underway, with updates planned for January.
AGS Collaboration – Collaboration with the Association of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (AGS) continues, focusing on aligning safety messages and producing collaborative safety guidance on industry best practices.
