Training Video – Standard Penetration Test (SPT) for Drillers

The first of the British Drilling Association (BDA) safety videos has been released to support the Association’s commitment to safety and training and the promotion of best practice, standards and professionalism in the drilling industry.

The first video looks at the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), an in-situ dynamic penetration test designed to provide information on the geotechnical engineering properties of soil. It is widely used to get the bearing capacity of soil directly at a certain depth, as well as the estimation of the consistency of clayey soils.

The video explains the test procedure as described in ISO 22476-3 and what the standard dictates in terms of equipment, calibrations, maintenance, pre-test checks, the test procedure (including test type), procedure and reporting requirements.

Each aspect of the technique is examined with common issues highlighted and addressed.
