BDA Webinar – Drilling for Ground Sourced Heat Pumps in the Nordic Countries – 23 March 2022

February 22, 2022

The latest British Drilling Association (BDA) webinar is planned for the 23 March 2022, at 1pm, and will discuss the interesting topic of “Drilling for Ground Sourced Heat Pumps in the Nordic Countries”.

Co-presented by Stefan Swarting, Business Development Manager, LKAB Wassara AB and Professor Göran Hellström, CEO NeoEnergy AB, the webinar is divided into two parts:

  1. Drilling Techniques – With particular emphasis on Down the Hole (DTH) Water Hammer, presented by Stefan Swartling – LKAB Wassara
  2. Underground Thermal Energy Storage (UTES) – How it may be used to save CAPEX and /or OPEX, presented by Professor Göran Hellström – NeoEnergy AB

With the cost, speed and accuracy of drilling the boreholes for Ground Heat Exchangers (GHE/GHX) a major concern for the entire Ground Source industry, whether the finished Borehole Heat Exchanger (BHE) is to be used to collect, reject, or store heat, the project always starts with proper design. Of course, physical delivery is also critical, there is no place for a ‘poke and hope’ approach in either process!

The webinar will discuss how drilling contractors deliver a high-quality installation swiftly, cost effectively and with as little disturbance as possible.

For the last decade methods which may be used to deliver improved BHE’s faster and cheaper have been trailed around the World. In Sweden LKAB Wassara has been at the forefront of this work, with its DTH water hammer, and has been working with Ground Heat Exchanger designers NeoEnergy AB for several years, combining their expertise to develop “Slim Hole” BHE’s. Their experiences will be presented.
