The BDA Health & Safety Sub-committee met on 15th January 2025, via Teams, to review safety practices, share updates on ongoing projects, and address key industry concerns.
Key Highlights:
- Equipment Safety: A critical failure in wire rope integrity during cable percussion drilling was reviewed, with plans to send samples for metallurgical analysis. Recommendations for rigorous inspections and proactive replacements were emphasised. Discussions also covered the usability of impact-resistant gloves, with trials planned to address issues of comfort and effectiveness.
- Occupational Health: Mental health awareness remains a priority. Blogs focusing on “Time to Talk” (February) and other health topics (April) are scheduled to encourage open conversations and well-being initiatives within the industry.
- Audit Challenges: The sub-committee noted difficulties in securing company commitment to audits. Discussions on Jack-Up Rigs and whether the auditors would face any challenges.
- Safety Guidance Review: The BDA H&S Manual is undergoing a comprehensive update, including a gap analysis of current legislation and recent publications. External support for drafting the revised manual is being considered to expedite the process.
- CSCS Card Restrictions: The committee discussed the implications of new restrictions on qualifications, with temporary solutions and awareness campaigns proposed to address challenges faced by workers and companies.
