The recent British Drilling Association (BDA) Event, “Solutions for the Future of the Geotechnical Engineering Seminar”, which was held 9th October at the Thistle Barbican Hotel in London, was a tremendous success, with feedback received commenting on the quality of its content, speakers and appropriateness of the subject matter.
The event kicked off with Tim Chapman, Director, Arup, delivering an informative scene setting view of where the geotechnical industry is at present and what factors will be driving technology in the near future. A more complex topic than it looks, the industry’s need to change was explored as well as overcome its natural caution to all things new.
Rutger van Goethem, of Eijkelkamp/SonicSamp, spoke about the “Progression in Sonic Drilling & Overcoming Future Limitations”, whilst Andy Jacques of Epiroc spoke about the related topic of “Automation of Drilling Rigs – Present and Future”. Both excellent topics generating much post-event discussion and interest.
Jackie Skipper of GCG Ltd, opened the post coffee-break session with a look at London Ground and the challenges it poses together with future ideas – her extremely informative discussion touched on many issues, but equally how new approaches can overcome these challenges.
Nicolas Loubier, Senior Manager at Bentley Software, spoke in detail about “Going Digital with the Geotechnical Data Workflow”. Specifically, Nicolas’s presentation focussed on the digital work flow and the cloud and how it is already impacting on the way we work.
Roger Chandler, of Keynetix spoke about “Using Geotechnical Data and New Technology as a Competitive Advantage” an engaging topic, which discussed the opportunities available to the drilling sector for those open and willing to embrace new technologies. In fact, it was clear that new technologies could be the real differentiator for companies going forward.
Thank you to all speakers, exhibitors and delegates for making the event a great success!
